Claudine Mashiane - Interior Decorator and Dress Maker
Claudine is a business woman who is known for commitment, honesty and reliability -- attributes that have enabled her to establish a number of strong small businesses.

In 2005 she discovered that Aloga Financial Services (PEER Servants’ partner in South Africa) was giving loans to help small businesses like hers, so she took a loan to buy materials for interior decorating. The customers liked her work and the business did well. After repaying this loan, she was able to take a 2nd loan in 2006 when she secured a contract to make uniforms for over 1000 school children. As she repaid that, she continued to keep her eyes open for new opportunities and in 2007 she won a contract to supply office equipment.

Claudine is a single mother and now knows the joy of providing for her children. Her dream is to buy a house so that she will have a secure place for them to live. And the way her business is growing that dream will soon be a reality.

Claudine is also impacting the lives of many others. She employs three people and shares her skills in sewing and interior decorating with the women in her church, the majority of who are unemployed, empowering them to provide for their families and impact their communities.

Did you know:
  • South Africa is the richest and most industrialized country in Africa. However, poverty is widespread. An alarming crime rate is driven by very high unemployment. (news.bbc.co.uk)
  • South Africa has the second-highest number of HIV/AIDS patients in the world (news.bbc.co.uk). The spread of the infection in many cases is the result of the large number of unemployed, idle youth, many of whom are not in school.
  • Life expectancy is 47 years for men and 51 years for women. (UN)
  • South Africa’s Gross National Income per capita is US $4,960 annually or $413 monthly. That’s 11% of US. (World Bank, 2006)

Your gift can help other hard working entrepreneurs like Claudine in South Africa who desire to provide for their families. There are many single mothers who are struggling to give a better life to their children so that they will not fall into the pitfalls that so often capture and destroy youth who grow up surrounded by material poverty. The average amount to help a person start or grow a small business in South Africa is $500.
