May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:5-6 (NIV)
Have you ever heard someone pray a prayer and have God’s Spirit say to you “I want YOU to answer that prayer“? It gives us a tingling sensation when that happens, to think that God could work in and through us in such a special way.
Jesus once prayed this prayer for unity, and it’s a prayer request God is calling you and me to answer. I find it interesting that He prayed for unity. Weren’t there more important things He could have asked from His Father to allow the kingdom of heaven to come to earth? Or could it be that there is so much more power packed into unity – complete, perfect unity – than we could ever imagine.
Come to find out, as we open our eyes to this theme of unity, we find MANY passages throughout the New Testament that call us to unity. And many of them have something in common – they call us to become like Jesus, to follow Him. And the same is true with this passage – it calls us to have the same attitude of mind toward each other as Jesus has toward us. Not just to speak or love or behave like Jesus, difficult as that may be. It goes much deeper, to something that few others can even see: it calls you and me to have an attitude of mind like Jesus.
This will be a long journey towards complete, perfect unity. You and I have a long ways to go to have an attitude of mind like Jesus. But if we commit each day, even each hour, to follow Jesus, there is hope, and a journey that will be filled with life and love.
Lord, let this reader and I be “All for One”, and of those unity seeds we need to plant to answer your prayer, may one of them be our commitment to follow Jesus in our attitude of mind.
This is the first in the “Follow Jesus” series of blog posts and kicks off our year committed to answering Jesus prayer to become one just as He and the Father are one.
