Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
Can we really experience the kingdom “on earth as it is in heaven”? What’s it going to take? According to the words from Jesus captured in our Key Verse, it’s going to take obeying everything he taught His disciples.
Have you ever sat down and read the Gospel of Matthew in one sitting? I would highly recommend it. What you will discover is Jesus was a Teacher. He was always teaching His disciples what the kingdom of heaven was like, how it grew, and how valuable it was. Why? Because He wanted those disciples (and He wants us) to extend that kingdom of heaven to earth.
So, when Jesus said to His disciples, “obey everything”, they knew what He was referring to. They also knew what Jesus told them weren’t just tips, suggestions, or hints. They were commands.
How will we ever establish “palpable kingdom presence” here and now? Is it “Mission Possible” or “Mission Impossible”? The only way we will ever establish it is if, first, we obey everything Jesus commanded, and second, we teach others to do the same. Before you set out to do so, go back and read Matthew and make sure you know what Jesus taught. They are life-giving, love-drenched, and mercy-extending words.
This is the second in the “Encourage and Support True Disciple Making” series of blog posts on our Journey to Palpable Kingdom Presence.
