The Ongoing Journey of Spiritual Maturity

The dictionary defines maturity as becoming more developed physically, mentally and emotionally, and behaving in a responsible way. I would say that true maturity isn’t just measured by age; it’s revealed in how we think, respond, and relate to others. It’s important to note that maturity doesn’t really have a clear endpoint. While we evolve in different areas of life, maturity itself has no stopping point. We don’t plateau. Instead, we keep growing, learning, and becoming.

This is also true in our journey of faith. Spiritual maturity is not a destination but a continual journey. We are constantly being shaped and refined by God as we walk with Him. Our relationship with Christ was never meant to plateau, it is meant to deepen overtime. The call is not only to believe but to grow in faith, fruit and character, and eventually, to multiply.

The Bible gives us many nuggets on how to nurture spiritual maturity. One example is Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus, where he urged believers not to remain spiritual infants, tossed around by every new teaching (Ephesians 4:14). Instead, he called them to grow up in every way into Christ by intentionally building spiritual habits. Paul encouraged them to pray consistently (Ephesians 6:18), stay grounded in God’s Word (Ephesians 6:17), and walk humbly and patiently with one another in love (Ephesians 4:2–3). These are some of the important foundations that encourage real growth.

Just as Paul encouraged the Ephesian church, may we also be reminded to cultivate habits that foster growth; consistent prayer, immersing ourselves in Scripture, and practicing other spiritual disciplines. Equally important is being intentional about community. Meaning, being connected with other believers, serving others, and allowing others to minister to us for the collective growth of the body of Christ. This is how we mature, gain accountability, and are empowered and commissioned to go out and make more disciples.

As we step into the new month of September, which of Paul’s teachings will you commit to building into your life?
