Walking Through Darkness with God’s Light
During this lent season, let us remember Job’s words:
“When God’s lamp shone upon my head, and by His light I walked through darkness” (Job 29:3).
Lent is our own journey of walking through a kind of darkness forty days of reflection, fasting, and honesty about our need for God.
Like Job, we may look back and remember seasons when God’s presence felt close, when prayer flowed easily, when we felt His guidance clearly. And like Job, we may find ourselves in a different place today struggling, waiting, wondering.
But here is the good news of Lent: we do not walk this path alone.
Job teaches us that true wisdom is not having all the answers about why we suffer. True wisdom is this:
“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).
Lent calls us back to this same truth. It invites us to stop chasing explanations and start pursuing God’s presence. To stop demanding answers and start trusting the One who holds all wisdom.
This season, let us follow Job’s example from his better days. Let us be people who:
Defend the oppressed and help the needy
Become like fathers and mothers to the poor
Carry God’s grace so visibly that others take notice
But let us also follow Job’s example from his suffering. When everything is stripped away, may we still hold onto the fear of the Lord. May we still turn away from evil. May we still trust that God sees us, even in the dark.
Lent leads us eventually to the cross. And beyond the cross—to the empty tomb. The same God who walked with Job in his suffering walked with Jesus through His suffering. And that same God walks with us today.
May this Lent be a time of drawing close to Him, even when He feels far. May we learn, like Job, that His presence is worth more than all the treasures of the earth.
Amen.

This is a powerful challenge to us. Thank you for it, dear son!
