WHEN LOVE BECOMES EVIDENCE

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” — John 13:35

In John 13–17, often referred to as the Farewell Discourse, Jesus prepares His disciples for life after His physical departure. At the center of His instruction is a defining mark of true discipleship: love.

At our local church, we say we love everyone with VAT love—not Value Added Tax—but love that is Visibly, Audibly, and Tangibly expressed. Not a sentiment, but a relational and embodied reality. John 13:35 presents love not as an optional virtue, but as the primary evidence of belonging to Christ.

This aligns with the broader New Testament witness. John later writes, “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.” (1 John 4:20) And Paul declares, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” (Galatians 5:6)

Love, therefore, is not peripheral; it is essential.

This reflects the doctrine of sanctification, the ongoing work of the Spirit forming believers into the likeness of Christ. As we abide in Him, His character becomes evident in us, including His love.

Jesus defines this love more precisely in John 15:13:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
This sacrificial love is self-giving, others-centered, and costly.

Importantly, this love is not self-generated. Paul reminds us, “God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 5:5) This means the believer’s capacity to love is not rooted in personality, but in participation in the life of God. As we remain connected to Christ, His love flows through us.

This has direct implications for mission: the credibility of our message is tied to the visibility of our love.

As Jesus prays in John 17:23, unity and love among believers reveal Him to the world. In this sense, love becomes both the evidence of discipleship and the means of witnessing the greater love of God.

For those engaged in service and community transformation, this is critical. Programs may create access. Strategy may create structure. But love creates encounter. And it is in that encounter that people begin to recognize Jesus Christ.

To love like Jesus, then, is to become a living expression of His presence, where heaven’s reality is made tangible on earth.

May His Mighty Name be Praised!
