Learning How to Extend More of Heaven to Earth

Discipleship. Jesus’ Core Strategy.

Jesus had a great vision: for the kingdom of heaven to come to earth. It was no small task, and it would take people willing to give up everything to make it possible. Those people are called disciples, and it is the desire of every disciple to join Jesus in embracing, experiencing, and extending the kingdom.

PEER Servants chooses a kingdom-centric discipleship theme every year that shapes the spiritual encouragement of our volunteers. The discipleship training takes place in larger chapter meetings, smaller discipleship groups, and online through this blog. Blog contributors include our PEER Servants volunteers, board and staff members from our partners, and other friends. We hope these posts will encourage you in your desire to live like Jesus and thereby extend His amazing kingdom to others.

2020 Theme: All for One

In John 17, Jesus prayed an amazing prayer…

“that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (verse 21, NIV)

Our desire in PEER Servants is to answer Jesus’ prayer – that, in the midst of all of our wonderful diversity and distinctives, we may become one just as.

Our 2020 discipleship theme is anchored in this Romans 15:5-6 (NIV) passage…

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So this year we are going to search the scriptures, find God’s teachings on unity, and ask the Holy Spirit to plant those truths in our lives like seeds. Here are the “unity seeds” we will explore:

Follow Jesus – Romans 15:5-6
Accept One Another – Romans 15:7
Extend Mercy – Colossians 3:12-13
Love One Another – Colossians 3:14
Trust in God – Proverbs 3:5-6
Put Others First – Acts 4:32
Know Your Calling – Ephesians 4:1-3
Pursue Peace – Psalm 133:1 and Philippians 4:8-9
Embrace Diversity – 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Some of these “unity seeds” may sound simple and familiar, but our fractured world shows us that it’s not easy. As children of God, let us encourage each other to embrace complete obedience in each of these areas and then watch God change our families, our communities, and our nations to look more and more like His kingdom right here on earth. Just think how much better our world would be if, as followers of Jesus, we were “All for One”.
