Our 2019 Discipleship Blog

Learning How to Extend More of Heaven to Earth

Discipleship. Jesus’ Core Strategy.

Jesus had a great vision: for the kingdom of heaven to come to earth. It was no small task, and it would take people willing to give up everything to make it possible. Those people are called disciples, and it is the desire of every disciple to join Jesus in embracing, experiencing, and extending the kingdom.

PEER Servants chooses a kingdom-centric discipleship theme every year that shapes the spiritual encouragement of our volunteers. The discipleship training takes place in larger chapter meetings, smaller discipleship groups, and online through this blog. Blog contributors include our PEER Servants volunteers, board and staff members from our partners, and other friends. We hope these posts will encourage you in your desire to live like Jesus and thereby extend His amazing kingdom to others.

2019 Theme: Seized for Something Greater

Next to Jesus, there’s probably no one God has used more to further extend the kingdom of heaven to earth than the Apostle Paul. Yet, as we see in Paul’s writings to the Church in Philippi, he felt he had not yet fully embraced the reason for which Jesus had taken hold of (or, better translated, seized) him. Paul realized he was “Seized for Something Greater”. The great news is so are we!

Our 2019 discipleship theme is anchored in this Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV) passage…

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

As we search the Scriptures, we find MANY things Jesus has seized us to be. In this year’s discipleship series, we will explore how we have been Seized to be…

More Than A Conqueror (Romans 8:37)
A Living Sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2)
The Light of the World (Matthew 5:14-16)
An Unentangled Runner (Hebrews 12:1-3)
A Friend to the Unfriended (Luke 14:12-14)
An Ambassador of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20)
A Hero in the Faith (Hebrews 11:6)
A Citizen of Heaven (Philippians 3:20)
An Image Bearer of Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:18)

Join us for an exciting adventure-filled year where we will follow Paul in learning to focus on the one thing, to live a life that is headed heavenward, and to take hold of the reason for which Jesus has taken hold of each of us!
